Which self-help books sell the most in France? You might expect the global social media phenomena to top the charts. The figures tell a different story. According to the annual rankings compiled by the GfK institute (now NielsenIQ BookData-GfK) and published by Livres Hebdo, the French book trade magazine, the shelf is dominated mostly by paperback classics, some of them more than twenty years old.

Short answer: the best-selling self-help book in France is Les quatre accords toltèques (The Four Agreements) by Don Miguel Ruiz, number one across the entire practical books category in 2023 and 2025, with 128,000 copies sold in 2025 alone. It is closely followed by Les 5 blessures qui empêchent d'être soi-même by Lise Bourbeau and Le Pouvoir du moment présent (The Power of Now) by Eckhart Tolle.

The 3 permanent fixtures

1. Les quatre accords toltèques (The Four Agreements), by Don Miguel Ruiz

Published in 1997 in the United States and in 1999 in France, this short book offers four rules for living inspired by Toltec wisdom: be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, always do your best. Its strength lies in its simplicity: four sentences you remember effortlessly and can apply the very next day. Twenty-five years after its release, it remains the best-selling practical book in the country. Read the summary of The Four Agreements.

2. Les 5 blessures qui empêchent d'être soi-même, by Lise Bourbeau

This is the great quirk of the French-language market: written directly in French by a Quebec author, this 2000 book describes five childhood wounds (rejection, abandonment, humiliation, betrayal, injustice) and the masks we develop to protect ourselves from them. It makes the podium every year, and its sequel, La guérison des 5 blessures, is also in the top 20. Readers find in it a very relatable way to make sense of their reactions; on the other hand, it is often criticized for its lack of scientific basis. Either way, its success shows how hungry French readers are for self-understanding.

3. Le Pouvoir du moment présent (The Power of Now), by Eckhart Tolle

This classic of contemporary spirituality invites readers to stop identifying with their thoughts and to live fully in the present moment, the only moment in which life actually unfolds. More than twenty-five years after its release, it is still in the top 10 of practical books, proof that the search for serenity is not fading. Read the summary of The Power of Now.

The other safe bets

Several English-language classics round out the ranking. Influence et manipulation (Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion) by Robert Cialdini, published in 1984, breaks down the mechanisms of persuasion and climbed to third place in practical books in 2023 (read the summary). Comment se faire des amis (How to Win Friends and Influence People), by Dale Carnegie, is still in the self-help top 10 nearly a century after its release (read the summary).

Among more recent hits, Avoir le courage de ne pas être aimé (The Courage to Be Disliked), a Japanese philosophical dialogue inspired by Alfred Adler, has passed 230,000 copies in France according to its publisher. L'art subtil de s'en foutre (The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck) by Mark Manson has passed 150,000 copies and its sales keep growing year after year (read the summary). Finally, Power, les 48 lois du pouvoir (The 48 Laws of Power) by Robert Greene has sold 150,000 copies since 2022 (we summarized it here).

French-grown phenomena

The French market also has its own best-sellers, often born outside the usual channels. Ta deuxième vie commence quand tu comprends que tu n'en as qu'une, by Raphaëlle Giordano, a self-help novel, has sold nearly 1.5 million copies in France according to Livres Hebdo. Natacha Calestrémé's books (La clé de votre énergie, Trouver ma place) sold around 500,000 copies in total between 2020 and 2022. In 2025, Boris Cyrulnik and Léna Situations entered the top 20 of practical books.

What this ranking says about French readers

Three lessons stand out from these figures. First, paperbacks rule: most of the best-sellers are classics available at a low price, which keep selling year after year. Second, French readers favor the inner life (emotions, wounds, serenity, relationships) over productivity. Finally, some global phenomena are missing from the charts: we found no trace of Un rien peut tout changer (the French translation of Atomic Habits) in the French annual top lists, even though it dominates sales in many other countries (read the summary of Atomic Habits).

The market itself is changing pace. After strong growth during and after the pandemic (+18% between May 2021 and April 2022 according to GfK), Livres Hebdo described in 2024 a category running out of steam, with publishers cutting back on new releases and betting on paperbacks and TikTok to reach younger readers.
