Which self-help books do Spaniards buy? The question is harder than it looks: unlike France or Germany, Spain has no official, public chart of book sales. You have to cross-check several sources: the annual rankings of the Casa del Libro bookstore chain, the weekly list of the El Cultural supplement, and the figures released by publishers.

Short answer: the self-help book with the best-documented sales in Spain is Hábitos atómicos, the translation of James Clear's Atomic Habits, with more than 700,000 copies sold according to its publisher. The best-selling Spanish author in the genre is psychiatrist Marian Rojas Estapé, whose book Recupera tu mente, reconquista tu vida was the top-selling non-fiction title at Casa del Libro in 2024.

The Hábitos atómicos phenomenon

With more than 700,000 copies sold in Spain according to its publisher, Diana (Planeta group), the translation of Atomic Habits is one of the biggest non-fiction hits of recent years in the country. James Clear's book shows how small habits, repeated every day, produce considerable changes over time. Read the summary of Atomic Habits.

Marian Rojas Estapé, Spain's go-to author

A psychiatrist based in Madrid, Marian Rojas Estapé has become the most widely read self-help author in Spain. Her first book, Cómo hacer que te pasen cosas buenas (2018), is still among the ten best-selling non-fiction titles at Casa del Libro in 2025. Her 2024 book, Recupera tu mente, reconquista tu vida, about attention and the effect of screens on our brain, was the chain's top non-fiction title in 2024. According to her publisher, her books have sold more than 3 million copies worldwide.

A timeless classic: Viktor Frankl

Written in 1946 by a psychiatrist who survived the concentration camps, El hombre en busca de sentido (Man's Search for Meaning) had spent 202 weeks on the El Cultural best-seller list as of October 2025, and was among the top five non-fiction titles at Casa del Libro in 2024 and 2025. Its thesis, that the search for meaning is the primary motivation of human beings, keeps resonating with new generations. Read the summary of Man's Search for Meaning.

Mostly Spanish authors

As in Italy, homegrown authors take up a lot of room. Besides Marian Rojas Estapé, there is researcher Nazareth Castellanos, who popularizes the neuroscience of body and mind, psychologist Alba Cardalda, who teaches how to set boundaries, and Rafael Santandreu, whose Las gafas de la felicidad was the tenth best-selling book in the country in 2014-2015, all genres combined. The global phenomenon Ikigai is also the work of two Spanish authors, Héctor García and Francesc Miralles (read the summary of Ikigai).

A growing book market

Unlike its neighbors, Spain's book market is growing: +3.3% in 2025, to 3.14 billion euros, according to the Spanish Publishers Federation. Non-fiction, however, fell by 9.2%, while fiction grew strongly. Self-help is not a separate category there, but it carries a lot of weight in non-fiction: half of Casa del Libro's 2025 top 10 was psychology or self-help.

What this ranking reveals

Spain stands out for the place it gives to psychology and neuroscience: its best-sellers are often written by doctors, psychiatrists or researchers, who ground their advice in how the brain works. For comparison, check out the best-selling self-help books in France, in Italy and in Germany.
